It’s raining golf balls! (20 Oct)

By admin on October 10th, 2013

Event: 20 October 2013

Next weekend at the golf course at Safety Beach, you can witness something unique: one thousand golf balls will be dropped from a helicopter!

Each golf ball has been numbered, each number corresponding to a $5 ticket (5 for $20), and nearest the pin wins $500 ($200 cash plus $300 Coles gift voucher); runners up win Precision Helicopter sightseeing flights.

Proceeds will go to a range of programs for local youth provided by Woolgoolga Rotary. This quirky fundraiser will help the club put on the annual driver awareness day (RYDA), and fund “Getting Out There Day” to prepare for life after school, training & development scholarships, sponsorships for summer-schools or science & engineering programs, public speaking competitions, Model UN Assembly teams, and school speech day awards.

Golf ball drop tickets are available at Woolgoolga Returned Services Golf Club Safety Beach, Woolgoolga Newsagency, Woolgoolga Post Office, or phone 0410 039 805 or 6654 7700 to order tickets. If you want, you can play in the golf Ambrose in the morning (register with the golf club first!), and the drop itself will happen on Sunday 20 Oct at 2pm.

CONGRATULATIONS JESSIE

27 Aug 2013 –

Bush survival, “Quidditch”, the impact of social media on teenagers, and the certainty of NSW winning the 2014 rugby league State of Origin were just some of topics the audience were treated to at Woolgoolga Rotary Club’s Public Speaking club final.  From a tight contest of seven students, all from Woolgoolga High School, Jessie Gentle emerged the winner. Rotary President Karen Sedgwick wished Jessie well for the next round, involving the winners from the local region.  The winner of two further rounds gets a trip to New Zealand, where they will be hosted by Rotarians.

Many in the room learned that “selfies” are self-photographed images loaded onto social media sites such as Facebook, and that those images may have a serious impact on the person, varying from positive to dreadful.  A light-hearted spin on surviving the Australian bush was popular.  An insight into the rough game of Quidditch, from the wizarding world of Harry Potter, formed a stark contrast to other talks dealing with the very real devastation of binge drinking, bullying or skin cancer.

Woolgoolga Rotary is also a proud sponsor of the Great Debate among the local primary schools, held at Mullaway Primary School in mid-August; and of the annual Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), involving student teams from as far away as Forster and Coonabarabran.
